Ancient woodland under threat in Hertfordshire
30 April 2014
Ancient woodland in Hertfordshire could be sacrificed to development under new government proposals.
Environment Secretary Owen Paterson suggests developers could build on dwindling areas of ancient woodland if they ‘offset’ by planting new trees elsewhere.
But the Green Party warns that new planting cannot replicate the biodiversity that has evolved over centuries in areas such as Birchanger Wood near Bishops Stortford and Whippendell Wood near Watford.
Councillor Ian Brandon said: “The idea that ancient woodlands, which have been there for over four hundred years, can just be replaced
with new trees is ridiculous. I am campaigning for nature conservation and for preserving, not destroying, our remaining ancient woodlands."
