Parking consultation – results and what’s next

1 May 2014

After Green Councillors received concerns from residents regarding parking in the area, we ensured the council asked YOU before deciding to do anything.

The results of whether to adopt resident parking showed that most residents were against a CPZ although four roads voted in favour – Copsewood Road, Victoria Road, Nevill Grove and Milton Street with the results very close in a number of roads including Brixton Road, Stanmore Road, Garfield Street, Parker Street, Windsor Road, Osbourne Road and Hatfield Road all voting 40% or above in favour.

Although we know many residents will be disappointed with the result, it confirms that we still need to do more to improve the parking situation in the area but that NO blanket CPZ will be imposed on the area. We will be meeting with council officers in the coming weeks to decide the next steps. We want to know your views on what we do next. Ideas given by residents from the consultation included:
•    Remove or change a number of double and single yellow lines to improve the amount of parking spaces, both at day and night.
•    Add to and change the parking bays in and around St Albans Road so there are more of them and its easier for residents to get to the shops
•    A commuter ban in some streets near the Junction (Shakespeare Street down to the bottom of Copsewood Road)
•    Having a limited CPZ in only the roads that voted in favour (like Bedford Street)
•    Change the use of the Harebreaks and Longspring car parks so they are more business and shop user friendly.
